Can Andy Murray become the most celebrated athlete in the history of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards when the winners are announced in December? Murray’s first podium finish at the SPOTYs came back in 2012, where a US Open win and an Olympic gold medal (as well as the runners up prize at Wimbledon) left him in 3rd place behind Jessica Ennis in 2nd and the freshly yellow jersey-ed Bradley Wiggins in 1st. 2013 then saw Murray then beat out jockey AP McCoy and rugby star Leigh Halfpenny to pick up his first award following his historic victory at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club earlier in the year. Flash forward 2 years and Murray had repeated that feat, this time for leading Great Britain to its first David Cup victory for 79 years. Given that in 2016 the Scot has won both his 2nd Olympic gold AND his 2nd Wimbledon title it’s no surprise that Murray is favourite for a record-breaking Sports Personality of the Year win, with Spreadex offering a fixed odds price of 11/5. While Murray might be the obvious favourite, his closest rival fixed odds-wise is a bit out of the left field. Triathlete Alistair Brownlee is at 10/3, not only thanks to his successful defence of his London Olympic title in Rio, but because he gave up the chance to win the World Triathlon Series in Mexico to instead help his brother Jonny (a silver medallist in Brazil) over the line. Unsurprisingly in an Olympic year the rest of the selection is largely made up of those who won gold in Rio. Mo Farah is at 17/4, while Laura Trott is at 15/2, Nick Skelton is at 18/1, Max Whitlock is at 33/1 and Jason Kenny is at 40/1. Of those who weren’t in action in Brazil, IBF Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is at 9/1, while Gareth Bale, who both led Wales to their shock semi-final finish at Euro 2016 and won the Champions League with Real Madrid, is at 11/1.
