It’s exactly a month until the start of the new Premier League season – so what better time to look at which teams gave the best return to punters last season? The table below shows how much would have been returned had you put a tenner on every team to win home and away on each of their 38 matches during the 2016-17 campaign. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was champions Chelsea who were the darlings of punters as Antonio Conte’s side defied the odds – and an early season sticky patch – to run away with the title in the end. But more interesting perhaps is the inclusion of Crystal Palace, Watford, Swansea and Burnley in the top six and among the seven sides that would have registered an overall profit (once you take the £380 in stakes into consideration). Palace’s surprise away win at Stamford Bridge in April, where the Eagles were available at a tad above 11/1, helped to push them up to second place in the table. Watford’s win at the Emirates in January, where the Hornets were at an average pre-match price of just over 12/1, pushed them up to fourth and Swansea’s win at Anfield, where the Swans were also just over 12/1, helped them up to fifth. Burnley only had one away win all season, but it was their solid home form of 10 wins at Turf Moor, that cemented them in sixth place in the Spreadex betting table. In stark contrast to Burnley’s home form, Manchester United’s disappointing return of just eight wins at Old Trafford saw them well down the standings in 16th place. Man City and Arsenal also gave poor returns from the big hitters. Southampton, despite actually finishing eighth in the final table, came in second bottom in terms of betting returns seemingly justifying the decision to sack boss Claude Puel and replace him with Mauricio Pellegrino.
