With just over a fortnight until their World Cup kicks-off, how will England fare against Nigeria on Saturday, at 5.15pm on ITV? It’s almost a year since England lost a game, a 3-2 defeat in France at the start of last summer. Since then they picked up 4 wins from their 4 final World Cup qualifiers, ensuring another unbeaten campaign to inflate hopes beyond unreasonable expectations. They also shared the honours in friendlies against Germany, Brazil and Italy, as well as a win in the Netherlands, results they look solid enough for England as long as you don’t dig too deep into the teams fielded by their opponents. As for the Super Eagles, they’ve had a mixed World Cup run-in. With their place in Russia secured before 2017 was over, their main preparation was the 2018 African Cup of Nations. Nigeria managed to scrap their way to the final, only to be outclassed by hosts Morocco, succumbing to a hefty 4-0 defeat in Casablanca. The friendlies in the interim period haven’t been great, the high point of a 1-0 win in Poland followed by losses to Serbia and Atletico Madrid, alongside a draw against DR Congo on Thursday. It is well within the reach of both sides to reach the World Cup last 16. In theory England will be battling with Belgium for the top spot in Group G, with Tunisia and Panama likely struggling to get a lot in. For Nigeria the path to the knockouts will be tougher; common sense would have Argentina in 1st, meaning Gernot Rohr’s men will need to fend off Croatia and Iceland if they are to get out of Group D. Due to proximity of this friendly to the FA Cup and Champions League finals, Gareth Southgate is unlikely to be fielding a full strength side on Saturday. Still, the hosts should be pretty comfortable, with Spreadex offering an England/Nigeria Goal Supremacy spread of 1.1-1.3 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.35-2.55.
