Can England knockout the Netherlands en route to Sunday’s UEFA Nations League final? Gareth Southgate’s side have done a pretty good job in showing that last summer’s country-uniting World Cup run wasn’t a fluke. Stuck in one of the trickier Nations League groups, England admittedly didn’t get off to the best start, slipping to a 2-1 Wembley loss against Spain, before drawing 0-0 in Croatia.
However, they travelled to Seville and came away with a 3-2 win, even if they did almost through away a 3-0 lead in the 2nd half. With Croatia beating Spain in Zagreb, the group then came down to the final fixture. In a sweet bit of revenge for their semi-final defeat in Russia, England snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, a 78th minute equaliser from Jesse Lingard and an 85th minute winner from Harry Kane sending them to the play-offs and Croatia to League B. Besting England’s group for difficulty, Netherlands arguably pulled off the biggest shock of the inaugural competition. Drawn with World Cup winners France and the always fancied Germany, the Dutch were easily third favourites (remember, they failed to feature in Russia). An opening loss to the French did little to change this perception; however, a 3-0 win over the Germans certainly did, Joachim Low’s side continuing the slide that started at the World Cup. A 2-0 victory against France in Rotterdam, and a 2-2 draw in Hamburg, eventually saw them top Group 1 on head-to-head goal difference over the world champions. England haven’t lost an international fixture since that Nations League-opening defeat against Spain; the Netherlands, meanwhile, lost their most recent Euro 2020 qualifier at the end of March. That just about gives Southgate’s lads the edge, with Spreadex offering an England/Netherlands Goal Supremacy spread of 0.05-0.25, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.5-2.7.
