Can England repeat their T20 success in their first Test against South Africa at Lord’s? After the disappointment of their semi-final exit, on home soil, to eventual ICC Champions Trophy winners Pakistan, England bounced back with a rather impressive trio of T20 performances against their Test opponents despite a swathe of key players – including new captain Joe Root – absent from the squad. A hefty 9 wicket win at the Ageas Bowl was followed by a slight 3 run defeat in Nottingham, before England roared back to form in the final game, securing a solid 19 run victory. While England see their T20 truants return to the fold, with Root joined by Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes, as well as the recalled Gary Ballance and the uncapped Toby Roland-Jones, South Africa have a few key men missing. AB de Villiers, who led the country in the T20 series, is continuing his sabbatical from Test cricket, while captain Faf du Plessis is still in South Africa following the birth of his first child (he should join the squad next week). Vernon Philander, at least, is back from injury, while opening batsman Dean Elgar takes the captaincy in de Plessis’ absence. Our Spreadex traders are expecting big things of Root, who sits at a Player Super Mega Runs spread of 130-140. He is followed by Alastair Cook, at 125-135, on the English side of the seam, and Hashim Amla, at 123-133, for the Proteas. As for the Player Performance spreads – where 1 point is awarded per run, 10 per catch, 20 per wicket and 25 per stumping – Stokes and Philander both sit at 120-125, followed by Ali at 110-115 and Johnny Bairstow at 106-111. A somewhat weakened Proteas, and a strong T20 showing, gives the hosts the edge heading into Thursday morning, with Spreadex offering an England 25:10 spread of 14.3-15.8 to South Africa’s 7.8-9.3. They’re also favourites for the series as a whole, at an England to Win the Series spread of 55.6-61.9.
