With the US Open heading into its closing stretch, who is going to complete the top 4 of the men’s and women’s draws? Rafa Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro make up the first semi-final on the men’s side of things. The former was pushed to his limits by Dominic Thiem, a 5 setter that lasted a whopping 4 hours and 48 minutes; the latter's victory was slightly epic, the Argentine eventually beating John Isner in 4 sets after initially losing the 1st. Hoping to join them are Novak Djokovic and John Millman, who face off in the wee hours of Thursday morning GMT. The super Serb is looking to build on his success Wimbledon campaign, and secure his 1st US title since 2015. Having wobbled slightly in the opening 2 rounds, Djokovic seems to have settled, dispatching of both Richard Gasquet and Joao Sousa in brisk fashion. In theory Millman isn’t too much of an obstacle; however, the Australian claimed the glorious scalp of Roger Federer in the 4th round, suggesting Djokovic shouldn’t get complacent. Nevertheless the 2-time US champ is the heavy favourite, at a Djokovic/Millman Match Supremacy spread of 18.5-21.5. Before that Marin Cilic takes on Kei Nishikori at 7pm. The Croatian’s one Grand Slam title actually came in New York back in 2018; even more interestingly, it came at the expense of Nishikori, spoiling the Japanese star’s sole appearance in a major final (so far). And it looks like history could repeat itself, with Spreadex offering a Cilic/Nishikori Match Supremacy spread of 3.5-6.5. As for the women’s competition, Serena Williams remains the favourite after beating Karolina Pliskova, and as an Outright Index spread of 47.49.5 to her semi-final opponent Anastasija Sevastova’s 24.5-26.5. There’s a lot of high-level inexperience on the bottom half of the draw, with 3 of the 4 players aiming for their Grand Slam semi-final debut. Only Madison Keys has reached that point previously, with semi-showings in the 2015 Australia Open and this year’s French Open, alongside a losing effort in 2017’s US Open final against Sloane Stephens. Keys, who has an Outright Index spread of 28.5-31.5, faces Carla Suarez Navarro on Wednesday, and sits at a Match Supremacy spread of 6.5-9.5. The other quarter-final has Japan’s Naomi Osaka take on the unseeded Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko. The latter’s big win came in the 2nd round, where she knocked out 2nd world no. 2 Caroline Wozniacki with a clean 6-4 6-2 win. Osaka, meanwhile, has had a fairly fortunate run, never coming up against someone with a higher seed. Still, she has the edge over her opponent, at an Osaka/Tsurenko Match Supremacy spread of 5.5-8.5.
