Sports Blog 06/04/2017: Horse Racing Preview – Grand National, Saturday 8th April 2017



It’s time to root out your betting pencils and pick the name you like best, as this Saturday it’s the Grand National 2017!

While, of course, Spreadex has a stable’s worth of fixed odds on offer, there is a whole host of spread betting opportunities that lay beyond the basic ‘pick a winner’ prices.

There are a throng of distance-based spreads, including Winning Distance at 5.5-6.5, the 2nd to 3rd Distance at 6.25-7.25, and 1st to Last at 133-148. Then there’s the No. of Finishers spread, at 16.5-17.5, or the Starting Price of Winner spread, at 23-24.5.

As for the runners themselves, Definitly Red (‘e’-less thanks to a registration spelling mistake) leads the pack at 10/1 after winning the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster. It’s worth noting, however, that, as The Sun highlights, the favourite hasn’t actually won at the National since 2010; in fact, in the last 20 years the pre-race frontrunner has only been victorious 5 times.

At 11/1 is Vieux Lion Rouge, who won the Becher Chase at Aintree and ended up in 7th place last year, followed by More Of That, who recently came in 6th at the Cheltenham Gold Cup, at 12/1.

There is then a quartet of horses at 14/1: Cause Of Causes, One For Arthur, Blaklion and The Last Samuri. That final filly has the best pedigree at the National; it was last year’s favourite, eventually finishing in 2nd place.

Rounding out the top 10 is Pleasant Company, ridden by 2-time winner Ruby Walsh, at 16/1, and Ucello Conti (who finished in 6th in 2016) and Saphir De Rheu, both at 18/1.
