UEFA Champions League Preview – Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester United, Wednesday 6th March 2019



Can Man United make history and reach the Champions League quarter-finals with a win at PSG this Wednesday?

You can’t argue with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s record since taking the reins of the red half of Manchester. Across all competitions the Norwegian has 13 wins – including over Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham – 2 draws and 1 loss, an enviable run that sees the club eyeing 3rd place in the league and one of the favourites in the FA Cup.


Yet that solitary defeat is a significant one. Outclassed at Old Trafford, goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe leave United needing to do what no team in the Champions League has done before: progress to the next round in the knockout stages despite losing at home by 2 or more goals in the 1st leg.

That the Parc des Princes has become something of a fortress this season only makes that tough task all the more difficult. Just once have PSG lost at home in 2018/19, a shock Coupe de la Ligue exit at the hands of bottom of the table Guingamp (who were rewarded for their audacity with a 9-0 thumping in the league 10 days later.)

Mbappe has been on a different level this season, scoring 29 goals in 30 games, and sits at a super high Super Mega PGM of 73-85. In contrast, United’s top scorer is Romelu Lukaku with just 12 goals; the Belgian international has rediscovered his form in the last couple of games, and heads to French at a Super Mega PGM of 22-27.

Without Paul Pogba due to suspension, and missing Phil Jones, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingrad, Juan Mata, Ander Herrara, Nemanja Matic and Matteo Darmian through illness or injury, the visitors may be in for an uncomfortable night in Paris.
