Can the British & Irish Lions secure an unlikely tour victory over New Zealand by winning the 3rd Test at Eden Park? Up until last Saturday things weren’t going too well for Warren Gatland’s boys. While they won plenty of the games they should, against the likes of New Zealand Provincial Barbarians, the Crusaders and the Chiefs, they also lost a couple they shouldn’t have, against the Blues and the Highlanders. Confidence wasn’t exactly high, then, heading into the 1st Test, and it showed on the field, with the Lions eventually losing 30-15 to the All Blacks after a second half hammering courtesy of Rieko Ioane. A lack of second half focus also hurt the Lions in their next match, a 31-31 draw against the Hurricanes that saw the visitors throw away a 14 point lead in the final 40 minutes. Given their fairly awful antipodean form there was a very real chance that the 2nd Test could have been an absolute disaster for the Lions. Instead, thanks to a 77th minute penalty Owen Farrell, they snuck a 24-21 victory, impressively preventing New Zealand from scoring a single try at the Wellington Regional Stadium. Not only that, it marked the first Lions win over New Zealand since 1993, and brought to an end the All Black’s 47-match winning streak on home turf. Now all of a sudden anything seems possible. If the Lions, who go to Eden Park unchanged, put in the kind of performance they did last weekend then they may well be able to win their first New Zealand series for 46 years! Our Spreadex traders aren’t quite as optimistic, however, offering a New Zealand/British & Irish Lions Points Supremacy spread of 11-14 alongside a Total Points spread of 46-49.
