Sports Blog 08/02/2016: Election Preview – 2016 US Presidential Election, Tuesday 8th November 2016

US Next President Fixed Odds February 8th

Republicans
Let’s start with the biggie; whilst the Democratic battle for the nomination is an unchallenged 2 horse race, the Republican contest still hasn’t settle into a similarly clear set of contenders.

Coming 1st in the Iowa caucus, but criticised for using underhand tactics to secure the win, Texas Senator Ted Cruz goes into New Hampshire at 11/2 to win the Republican nomination and 18/1 to become the next US President.

Moral vacuum and podium blowhard Donald Trump, despite still leading in the polls, surprisingly finished in 2nd in Iowa (at 24.3% to Cruz’s 27.6%), but remains ahead of his Texas rival at 2/1 to win the nomination and 7/1 to become next President.

Yet jumping to the front of the pack is Marco Rubio, who finished in third in Iowa with 23.1% of the vote, and is at 13/10 to win the nomination and 7/2 to be President. However, the Florida Senator had a disastrous debate at the weekend, his failure to dispel Chris Christie’s criticism that he can only repeat ‘memorised 25-second’ speeches instead of giving a spontaneous answers by, well, repeating the same 25-second speech causing ‘Marcobot’ to trend on Twitter. Whether or not the mistake has seriously impacted Rubio’s momentum heading into New Hampshire is unclear, though the fact that it was the defining moment of the debate suggests it may have.

Beyond the (current) front three, Jeb Bush is 8/1 to secure the nomination, whilst Rubio’s nemesis Chris Christie is 28/1. Interestingly, and serving as the perfect example of how quickly things can change over the coming months, former frontrunner (and debate-entrance-fumbler) Ben Carson is at 300/1 to become the Republican candidate and 500/1 to become the next US President.

Democrats
Things may be far narrow over in the Democratic field, but they are no less interesting. Finishing the Iowa caucus within a hair’s breadth of each other, Hilary Clinton won with 49.84% to Bernie Sanders’ 49.59%.

Yet Spreadex aren’t feeling the Bern as much as Iowa clearly was, with the Vermont Senator at 15/4 to win the Democratic nomination compared to Clinton’s 2/11. There is a similar gap when looking at the fixed odds for the next US President, with Clinton sitting at 5/6 (the best out of all the candidates) to Sanders’ 9/1.

Of course there is still a long, long way to go until the November 8th election, and Spreadex will be there every step of the way with the latest fixed odds opportunities!
