With Mercedes teammate – and arch nemesis – Nico Rosberg retiring at the end of last season, Lewis Hamilton must’ve though he’d have an easy ride this year. So far it has proven to be anything but. Hamilton hasn’t been completely devoid of wins or podium finishes. He won in China and Spain, and finished 2nd in Australia and Bahrain; yet erratic positioning in Russia and, most recently, Monaco have left the British driver behind Sebastian Vettel by 25 points. The German legend failed to pick up a single victory in 2016. This year, however, he has been remarkably consistent, winning in Australia, Bahrain and Monaco while finishing 2nd in each of the other three Grand Prix. If Vettel does manage to sustain this comeback throughout the rest of the season he would not only nab his first championship since 2013, but would equal Juan Manuel Fangio’s 5 titles from the 1950s (he’d still trail Michael Schumacher’s record-breaking 7 wins). There’s not a lot separating the frontrunners on either the Canadian Grand Prix Race Index or the Drivers Season Index. In regards to the former Hamilton is the leader, at a spread of 54-58 to Vettel’s 52-56 – unsurprising, really, given that the Mercedes man has triumphed at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve 5 times in his career, including back-to-back victories in 2015 and 2016. Yet in the long term Vettel has the advantage, at a Drivers Season Index spread of 47-50 to Hamilton’s 44-47, with fixed odds of 4/6 and 11/8 respectively. Interestingly this still hasn’t dethroned Mercedes from the top of the Constructors Championship Index, at 40-43 to Ferrari’s 37-40, despite trailing their Italian rivals by 17 points. That’s because Rosberg’s replacement Valtteri Bottas is currently in 2nd place, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in 4th, and is the only driver to break up the Hamilton/Vettel duopoly, taking the top spot in Russia.
