Can Aston Villa saunter through the 1st round of the EFL – sorry, Carabao – Cup with a win over Colchester United? Considering Villa are among the favourites for promotion this season – they have a Season Points spread of 72-74 and are 7/1 to end up topping the Championship – they’ll be a bit frustated at how Saturday’s curtain raiser against Hull panned out. The hosts nabbed a very early goal thanks to Gabby Agbonlahor, before spending the rest of the first half unsuccessfully trying to make the most of their dominance. The Tigers, still getting used to Championship football after last season’s Premier League relegation, regrouped after the break and turned the pressure up on Villa, finally breaking through on the hour mark with a volley from 20-year old Jarrod Bowen. From there it was a stalemate, neither side able to take the lead (though Villa did come close in the dying moments, only for Andre Green to send his header over the open goal). Luckily for Villa their opponent’s opening game went far worse. After missing out on a place in the League Two play-offs by a point last season, Colchester will have been hoping for a better start to 2017/18 than a heavy 3-1 loss away at Accrington Stanley, their goal nothing more than an 81st minute consolation. It should come as no surprise, then, that Villa are favourites heading into the 1st round fixture, even if it does looks like they’ll be fielding a slightly more inexperienced side. Scott Hogan sits atop the Super Mega PGM with a spread of 39-45, ahead of Henri Lansbury at 19-23, and Conor Hourihane and Birkir Bjarnason, both at 16-20. All have had limited playing time since joining the club, and will be looking to prove their value ahead of Saturday’s trip to Cardiff. Anything other than a convincing victory will be a disappointment to Steve Bruce, especially following the weekend’s draw, with Spreadex offering an Aston Villa/Colchester United (h) Goal Supremacy of 0.95-1.15 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.6-2.8.
