Will it be Forest Green or Tranmere Rovers who join Newport County in the League Two play-off final on May 25th? You could make the argument that Forest Green did well to only lose 1-0 in their 1st leg at Prenton Park. Centre back Gavin Gunning was sent off after just 15 minutes, forcing Mark Cooper’s men to play the majority of the fixture with 10 men. Yet, by the final whistle, the two sides were separated by a sole goal, Oliver Banks’ beauty giving the hosts the advantage.
Forest Green actually finished above their play-off opponents in the season proper, ending 2018/19 on 74 points to Tranmere’s 73. They also twice beat the Rovers: 3-1 at home last October, and then 1-0 at Prenton Park less than a month ago. So, they still have a chance of reaching Wembley even if, according to the BBC, the last 9 sides to lose the 1st leg of a League Two play-off semi away from home have gone on to miss out on the final. The Rovers will be relieved that they put their best foot forward in the 1st leg, given that they had a pretty terrible end to the season, managing just one win in their last 7 fixtures, even closing out the final weekend with a 3-1 defeat at Crawley Town. In general Micky Mellon’s men haven’t had the best time on the road, with 9 of their 13 league defeats being away from home. It’s that final stat that perhaps gives the hosts the advantage, with Spreadex offering a Forest Green/Tranmere Goal Supremacy spread of 0.25-0.45, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.1-2.3.
