How will England fare as they begin their first ever day-night Test, against the West Indies, on Thursday? Despite a mid-series wobble, England’s visit from South Africa ended up being a pretty impressive summer fling for Joe Root and co. The 1st Test ended in a stonking 211 runs victory, only for South Africa to put the willies up England with a 340 runs win a week later. Yet any questions over Root’s captaincy were more than answered in the new two Tests, with England winning the 3rd and 4th fixtures by 239 runs and 177 runs respectively. That 3-1 triumph marked England’s first Test series win over the Proteas since 1998, and should see them enter their pre-Ashes battle against the West Indies with plenty of momentum. In a bid to attract more viewers – for those not lucky enough to have a TV in the office, normal Test matches effectively require time off from work to watch – Thursday’s series-opener will mark the start of only the 5th international day-night match. Session 1 is from 2pm to 4pm, session 2 from 4.40pm to 6.40pm, before session 3 runs from 7pm to 9pm. It even comes with a pink ball instead of the traditional red, to ensure the players can spot the thing during the mellow hues of twilight. Given that the West Indies lost their most recent test, on home soil, to Pakistan 2-1 back in May, England will be confident that by the end of this scheduling experiment they’ll come out on top. It certainly looks like they will, at least, with Spreadex offering an England to Win the Series spread of 90.9-95.2 (it makes up to 100) compared to the visitors’ 0.7-4.8. There’s also the England/West Indies Series Supremacy spread of 19-21, where the overall victor is awarded 10 points plus 5 points per Test won.
