Sports Blog 14/01/2015: Match Preview – Ipswich Town vs Southampton, Wednesday 14th January 2015

Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich are sitting in 3rd in the Champsionship, only 1 point behind the top two of Bournemouth and Derby. The Blues have only lost 2 home games since last March, and will not be intimated by their high-flying opponents. A loss to promotion rivals Derby at the weekend may have knocked Ipswich a bit, but the chance of a cup run will be too tempting for McCarthy, who is chasing his third elevation to Premier League with a Championship side after doing the same with Sunderland and Wolves in previous years.

Yet his Ipswich side will face tough competition against a Southampton team that just beat Manchester United at Old Trafford to leap-frog the so-called ‘Gaalacticos’ to reach 3rd in the league. Ronald Koeman’s side have been the most unlikely success story of the top flight this season, and has caused the manager to have to deny rumours he will replace Luis Enrique at his old club Barcelona. The Saints haven’t lost in 6 games, including victories over United and Arsenal, and a draw against Chelsea, so will be fancying their chances at Portman Road despite the frustrations Ipswich provided last week.

The winner of tonight’s game will see a visit from Crystal Palace in the fourth round; Palace have seen a turnaround in form under the new tenure of Alan Pardew, and could provide a tricky fixture for Ipswich or Southampton. However both sides are in the kind of form that could see a sustained cup run and will look to their over-performing strike-forces for the edge. Ipswich’s top scorer Daryl Murphy is at 13/2 fixed odds betting to score first with 17 goals; David McGoldrick is at 8/1 with 7 goals and Chrisophe Berra at 20/1 with 5 goals. With Sadio Mane off to the African Cup of Nations, the Saints will look to Graziano Pelle, on 11 goals and favourite to score first at 7/2, alongside Schneiderlin on 4 goals at 14/1, and Dusan Tadic at 20/1, also on 4.
