Starting on Thursday, will the 2017 US Open provide the same level of excitement as April’s Masters play-off finale? Unsurprisingly PGA world no. 1 and last year’s controversial US Open victor Dustin Johnson is favourite to win at Erin Hills. Johnson didn’t make an appearance at the Masters due to a back injury, and doesn’t seem to have fully shaken off the knock since coming back. Nevertheless, despite form and history – there hasn’t been a successful US open title defence in 28 years – counting against him he sits atop Spreadex’s Leaderboard Index, at 12-15, and has the best a fixed odds price, at 7/1. Just behind Johnson is another, far younger, American Jordan Spieth. Since his incredible 2015, where he won both the Masters and the US Open, tied for 4th at the Open Championship and was runner-up at the PGA Championship, Spieth has been a bit of a disappointment. 2016 saw a dramatic drop in form, while this year’s Masters appearance ended in a lacklustre (tied) 11th place finish. Still, he heads to Wisconsin with a Leaderboard Index spread of 10-13 and a fixed odds price of 14/1. Trailing Spieth on the Leaderboard Index, at 9-12, but with better fixed odds of 12/1 is world no. 2 Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman hasn’t won a major since his Open Championship/PGA Championship double back in 2014, and has struggled with a rib problem this year, though he insists he is ‘totally fine’ to play. Aussie Jason Day is at a Leaderboard Index spread of 9-12 with fixed odds of 14/1, while Jon Rahm, who went pro after his appearance at the US Open last year and is much fancied to make a splash this time around, is at 7-9 and 16/1. April’s shock Masters winner Sergio Garcia then sits at a Leaderboard Index spread of 6-8 with fixed odds of 22/1, the same as Californian Rickie Fowler.
