Will West Brom be able to snatch a place at Wembley, or do Aston Villa have a spot in the Championship play-off final in the bag? Dwight Gayle had quite the 1st leg. The Newcastle loanee gave West Brom a dream start, scoring his 24th goal of the season after 16 minutes. Yet a 2nd yellow 2 minutes before the final whistle saw the 29-year old off the pitch and, crucially, out of Tuesday’s fixture.
That’d be worry enough, even if the Baggies had held onto their lead. The fact they conceded twice in the space of 4 minutes – first Conor Hourihane’s equaliser, and then Tammy Abraham’s converted spot-kick – means they go into the 2nd leg on the back foot and without the man most likely to drag them into the final. Luckily, West Brom do have adequate back-up in Jay Rodriguez, who’s currently on 22 goals. That puts Rodriquez at a Super Mega PGM of 33-39, not too far behind Abraham, who sits at 39-46 having spent his latest season away from Chelsea banging in 26 goals in 38 matches in all competitions. The honours have been shared between the West Midlands rivals in 2018/19. Back in December the Baggies stole a point in the 91st minute, before beating Villa 2-0 in mid-February. Then, of course, Dean Smith’s side won at the weekend, gaining the edge at the most important time. That makes it hard to call exactly who will triumph in the 2nd leg, causing Spreadex to offer a West Brom/Aston Villa Goal Supremacy spread of -0.1-0.1, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.75-2.95. And given the 1st leg saw 5 cards handed out – all to the Baggies – the Bookings spread of 50-54 might be one to watch.
