Can Arsenal finally get the better of one of Europe’s big boys when they travel to Bayern Munich at 7.45pm on BT Sport 2? In a season where Arsenal are pulling out all the classic moves, it is apt that, even when winning their Champions League group, they draw Bayern Munich in the round of 16. In their last few European campaigns the Gunners have suffered a wide range of disappointments against the German giants, from the away goals defeat of 2012/13 to the nadir that was their 5-1 thrashing at the Allianz Arena in last season’s group stages. There has been the odd win here or there, but never enough to actually overcome Bayern and secure significant progress in the competition. And, if all the current signs are correct, it doesn’t look like that will happen this time round either. Confidence at the club, and in Arsene Wenger, is crushingly low, and, in 4th place 10 points behind Chelsea, their title run is likely over. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Arsenal are the joint top scorers in the Premier League, and have its most in-form forward in Alexis Sanchez, who travels to Germany with a Super Mega PGM of 17-21. In stark contrast, for all but 3 weeks Bayern have sat at the top of the Bundesliga, the club’s lead over 2nd place RB Leipzig (Germany’s equivalent to Leicester last season) extending to 7 points at the weekend. They’re not invincible – they finished 2nd in Group D after losses to Atletico Madrid and, shocking, Russia’s Rostov – but they’re pretty damn close. They also have Robert Lewandowski, who’s 20 goals in all competitions leaves him with a terrifying (for Arsenal at least) Super Mega PGM spread of 67-77. If Wenger wants this season to amount to more than the usual frustrations then a statement is needed on Wednesday night. Sadly the odds aren’t in the visitors’ favour, with Spreadex offering a Bayern Munich/Arsenal Goal Supremacy spread of 1.3 to 1.5 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.9-3.1. Wednesday’s other game sees Real Madrid host Napoli at 7.45pm on BT Sport 3. After finishing behind Borussia Dortmund in Group F Real will feel quite fortunate to have drawn their Italian visitors, a team that on paper they shouldn’t have too many problems with. The Spanish side have a pretty tight grip on La Liga, sitting 1 point ahead of Barcelona but crucially with 2 games in hand, and, of course, wield the might of Cristiano Ronaldo, who heads into the 1st leg with a Super Mega PGM of 67-77. As for Napoli, they are very much like Arsenal in the sense that they have effectively been punished for finishing top of their group. Yet they are 3rd in Serie A, and haven’t lost a game in any competition since the end of October. Still, they may struggle on Wednesday night, with Spreadex offering a Real Madrid/Napoli Goal Supremacy spread of 1.05-1.25 alongside a Total Goals spread of 3-3.2.
