Can Middlesbrough sneak into the Championship top 2 with a win at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night?

It’s all very tight at the top of the Championship. Only 6 points separate Sheffield United in 1st place and their Wednesday counterparts in 6th, with Boro somewhere in the middle, in 4th place on 22 points.

After failing at the play-off point last season, Middlesbrough are having another go at promotion – though, ideally, this time they will go straight to the Premier League, rather than take the longer route. So far they’ve won 6, drawn 4 and lost 2, their most recent result being a 2-0 defeat at home to fellow top 6ers Nottingham.

Yet even with that slip-up they still have the tightest defence in the entire Championship, letting in just 6 goals in 12 games. Combine that with a healthy 22 goals scored and their goal difference is only bested by West Brom.

Propping up the bottom end of the play-off zone, Wednesday appears to be in far better shape than they were last season. While they got off to a very poor start, with 2 losses and a draw in their first 3 games, since then they’ve only lost once. They are, however, very leaky at the back, their 18 goals conceded the highest tally out of anyone in the Championship’s top 13.
