Sports Blog 21/03/2016: Twenty20 World Cup Preview – England vs Afghanistan, Wednesday 23rd March 2016

A Chris Gayle century (the controversial batsman becoming the first player to score 2 centuries at a T20 World Cup) powered West Indies to a 6 wicket win over England in their opening game, a sharp shock that cemented a 15th defeat in 27 T20 World Cup games for Eoin Morgan’s side. Yet England improved in their 2nd game, 83 runs from Joe Root (who had 48 to his name against the West Indies) helping the side overcome South Africa’s 229-6, until England’s victory the second highest score ever achieved at a T20 World Cup.

Though that still leaves England 4th in Group 1, all is not lost. Wins over Afghanistan and Sri Lanka (who breezed past Afghanistan but, like England, lost heavily to the West Indies) and defeat for the Proteas against West Indies could still see Eoin Morgan’s men reach the semi-finals, the side benefiting from avoiding a Group 2 that contains New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan and India. Yet England remain just behind South Africa to reach the semis on Spreadex’s Group 1 Index (where the winner receives 50 points, the runner-up 25, 3rd place 10, 4th 5 and 5th a big fat 0), with a spread of 19-22 to the latter’s 20-23.

At least the next hurdle to the semi-finals should be a relative doddle. Qualifying for the Super 10 with a group-topping performance in the initial stages of the competition (brushing past Zimbabwe, Scotland and Hong Kong) Afghanistan have since lost to Sri Lanka (by 6 wickets) and South Africa (37 runs). That understandably leaves them with the worst odds in pretty much everything, be it 1000/1 to win the whole competition (compared to England’s middling 13/2 and India’s tournament best 11/4) or their lowly Group 1 Index spread of 0.5-1.5.

It will come as no surprise, then, that England are heavily favoured to win Wednesday’s match, at a 84.6-90 to Afghanistan’s 10-15.4, with a Supremacy spread of 40-48.
