UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifiers Preview – Northern Ireland vs Estonia, Thursday 21st March 2019



Without a guaranteed spot in the play-offs, can Northern Ireland get what could be a gruelling Euro 2020 qualifying campaign off to a bright start with a win over Estonia, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports Football?

Michael O’Neill’s men had a truly woeful Nations League last year. Losing every one of their fixtures, they finished bottom of a group containing Austria and Bosnia & Herzegovina, relegating them to League C next time the competition rolls around in 2020/21. Worse yet, they are ranked lowest out of all the League B nations, meaning their chances of sneaking into the play-offs are effectively non-existent.


And Northern Ireland really could have used a back-up route to the Euros, given they have been draw in a group with Germany and Netherlands. Even if the former is well off its world conquering peak from few years ago, they’ll still be favourites, alongside their Dutch counterparts, to qualify.

If the Green and White Army are to pull off a shock and reach the transcontinental competition, then picking up all 3 points on Thursday is a must. Luckily Estonia were almost as bad as Northern Ireland in the Nations League.

In 6 games they picked up one win, away to Greece, and one draw, against Hungary, leaving them bottom of Group 2 and relegated to League D. It also means they, like their Thursday hosts, stand little to no chance of reaching the Euros through the play-offs.

A loss this evening would make it 8 consecutive competitive international games without a win for the Irish. They stand a chance of breaking that run, however, with Spreadex offering a Northern Ireland/Estonia Goal Supremacy spread of 1.1-1.3 alongside a Total goals spread of 2.05-2.25.
