Will Man United bounce back from Saturday’s shock by giving Swansea an EFL Cup thumping, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports Football? It’s safe to say United’s weekend result against Huddersfield came as a bit of a surprise – though, maybe not as much as it would of back in September. For the first 2 months of the season United tore through the competition; they scored 23 goals and conceded just 2 in their first 7 league games, while trouncing FC Basel and CSKA Moscow in the Champions League and Burton Albion in the EFL Cup. However, the most recent international break, combined with Jose Mourinho’s drab tactics against Liverpool, seems to have taken the wind out of United’s sails. That painfully dull 0-0 draw at Anfield was followed by a narrow 1-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League and, on Saturday, the bizarre sight of a 2-1 loss to Premier League debutantes Huddersfield. Having been toe to toe with Man City since the start of the season, that drop off in intensity has caused a gap to widen between the red and blue sides of Manchester, with United now 5 points adrift of the league leaders. Mourinho won’t be happy that Romelu Lukaku has slowed down, either – though to be fair, on 11 goals in 13 games he still justifies a Super Mega PGM of 49-57, even if he hasn’t found the back of the net in October. Of course, all of these are champagne problems when compared to what Swansea are going through. It looks like the Welsh club are set for another relegation scrap; currently they’re in 15th place, one point ahead of Bournemouth in 19th and separated from 18th place Everton by goal difference alone. The EFL Cup has been the only real source of solace for Paul Clement. The 2nd round saw a confident 4-1 win over Milton Keynes – easily the Swans’ biggest win of the season so far – while they beat Reading 2-0 in the 3rd round. That relatively easy cup run comes to an end on Tuesday, however, with Spreadex offering a fairly conclusive Manchester United/Swansea (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.9-1.1 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.5-2.7.
