Sports Blog 24/09/2018: Golf Preview – Ryder Cup, Friday 28th to Sunday 30th September 2018



After some early 2010s domination, Europe lost their Ryder Cup crown to the United States in Minnesota in 2016. Will they be able to take it back this year, when the golfing continents face off in France this Friday?

On paper it certainly looks like the United States has the better team, including 6 of the PGA Tour top 10. Captained by Jim Furyk – who featured in every tournament between 1997 and 2014 – the Yanks count among their ranks the Player of the Year, 2018 US Open winner and PGA Championship champ Brooks Koepka, alongside Masters victor Patrick Reed, PGA Scoring Leader Dustin Johnson and Money Winner Justin Thomas.

Furyk’s personal picks, meanwhile, including a newly confident Tiger Woods, who just won the Tour Championship – his first PGA Title for 5 years – and Bryson DeChambeu, who rounded out his season with back-to-back victories at The Northern Trust and Dell Technologies Championship.

Imposing stuff indeed. Thomas Bjorn’s Europe do have one ace up their sleeve, however: world no. 1 Justin Rose. Though the Englishman failed to add to his 2013 US Open win in terms of success at the majors, his season-closing triumph at the FedEx Cup – netting him a cool $10 million – was the perfect precursor to his trip to Le Golf National in Guyancourt.

As for his teammates, they include Open Championship winner Francesco Molinari, world no. 5 Rory McIlroy and Spaniards young (23 year old Jon Rahm) and old (38 year old Sergio Garcia).

The US haven’t managed consecutive Ryder Cup wins since 1991 and 1993. Yet they’re just about fancied to do so this time out. Spreadex are offering a USA/Europe 10-3 spread of 1.5-4.5, alongside USA and Europe 25 Index spreads of 12.75-14.25 and 10.25-11.75 respectively. In terms of fixed odds, meanwhile, the Americans are favourites at 4/5, with Europe at 5/4 and the chances of a Tie, something that hasn’t happened since 1989, at 10/1.
