Can Chelsea extend their lead at the top of the table, however briefly, with a victory against Southampton, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports 1? Heading into the weekend’s FA Cup semi-final with Tottenham, Chelsea were looking a bit shaken. Up until that point April had been a rough month, with wins over Man City and Bournemouth sandwiched between losses against Crystal Palace and Man United, losses that shrank the Blues’ lead over Spurs to just 4 points. There was further cause for concern when Antonio Conte left Eden Hazard and Diego Costa off the team sheet for Saturday’s trip to Wembley, suggesting the Italian was worried about his side’s grip on the title. However, despite having just 37% of the possession Chelsea produced a thrilling 4-2 victory, not only leaving Conte on track for the double, but dealing a psychological blow to their title rivals. The confidence gained from that win should be on show against the Saints, especially with Hazard and Costa (at Super Mega PGM spreads of 33-39 and 48-56 respectively) likely back in the starting 11. Though they have played just 31 games – the joint fewest alongside Arsenal – Southampton’s season may have already come to an end. Stuck in 9th place they are 17 points behind the Gunners in 7th, the expanded lower end of the Europa League spots thanks to Man United’s EFL Cup win and the fact that Chelsea and Arsenal are in the FA Cup final. Last time the two sides met Hazard and Costa nabbed a goal each, which may be something of an omen for Tuesday’s game, with Spreadex offering a Chelsea/Southampton Goal Supremacy spread of 1.2-1.4, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.75-2.95.
