Will defending champion Roger Federer reach a record 30th Grand Slam final by beating Hyeon Chung in their Australian Open semi-final on Friday? The Aussie Open has been an odd one, especially on the men’s side of the draw. Andy Murray couldn’t compete due to a hip injury; Rafael Nadal had to retire during his quarter-final; and, at the hands of Chung, Novak Djokovic suffered his first straight sets defeat at the competition for more than a decade, resulting in a shock 4th round exit. And that’s not to mention the likes of Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, David Goffin and Stan Wawrinka all suffering premature exits. All this allowed for 2 unseeded players, Hyeon Chung and Kyle Edmunds, to reach the Australian Open semi-finals, the first time such a thing has happened in a Grand Slam competition since Marat Safin and Rainer Schuttker did the same at Wimbledon in 2008. And while Edmund faltered in the face of Marin Cilic, losing 6-2 7-6 6-2, Chung is still in with a chance of nabbing a scalp even bigger than the one he took off Djokovic. Of course, on paper at least, his chances of doing so are pretty slim. Federer is yet to drop a set, breezing past Aljaz Bedene, Jan-Lennard Struff, Richard Gasquet, Marton Fucsovics and Tomas Berdych with nary a blip. He’s so clearly the frontrunner that, despite Cilic already being in the final he trails the Swiss superman on Spreadex’s Outright Index, with the Croatian at 45-47 to Federer’s 48.5-50.5 (Chung is at 24-26). As for the semi-final itself, the 5-time Aussie champ is at a comfortable Federer/Chung Match Supremacy spread of 14-17, with a Total Sets spread of 3.6-3.76, a Total Games spread of 37-39 and a Total Points spread of 233-240.
