UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifying Preview – Montenegro vs England, Monday 25th March 2019



After a sterling start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign, can England mash Montenegro at 7.45pm on ITV 1?

Only one side matched England’s performance in their opening qualifier, and that was Cyprus facing regular international whipping boys San Marino. Gareth Southgate’s lions crushed Czech Republic 5-0, putting them firmly in charge of a 5-nation Group A that also includes Kosovo, Bulgaria and Monday’s hosts Montenegro.


Raheem Sterling was the undoubted star of that Wembley win. It is mad to think the Man City ace, has only 7 goals in 48 appearances for England; 3 of those came on Friday, his hat-trick the backbone of England’s victory. Harry Kane’s penalty just before the break was also even won by Sterling. The night was capped off by an own goal from Bristol’s Chelsea-loanee Tomas Kalas.

Though Kane remains the country’s best bet going forwards – the Tottenham forward sits at a robust Super Mega PGM of 59-69 – Sterling will be the one looking to carry over his momentum from last week, and heads to Podgorica at a spread of 32-38.

Given they are perhaps the least fancied side in Group A, Montenegro were a tad unlikely in their first qualifying fixture. Ljubisa Tumbakovic’s side led from the 50th minute in Bulgaria, only for an 82nd minute equaliser from the spot to leave the points shared equally, Montenegro letting their grip slip on 3 points that are potentially going to be hard to come by elsewhere.

If they breezed past their Czech opponents, then Kane and co. shouldn’t have any issues at the City Stadium, with Spreadex offering an England/Montenegro (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 1.35-1.55, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.6-2.8 and a Bookings spread of 40-44.
