Can Joe Root get England’s South African series back on track with a win at the Oval? Root’s debut as Test captain was a dream. At Lord’s England ran rampant over the Proteas, storming to a 211 run victory thanks to a superb performance from Moeen Ali. Confidence, then, was understandably high heading into the 2nd fixture at Trent Bridge. But South Africa were looking for revenge, the final result making England’s initial triumph appear positively nail-biting. The return of Faf du Plesiss, who missed the 1st Test due to the birth of his child, had a remarkable effect on his countrymen, who set out to show England what a proper thumping looks like. The hosts were left chasing 474 for victory in their second innings after the visitors had racked up a combined total of 678. Even with such a high target England’s second innings showing was pretty dismal, in the end gifting South Africa a 340 run victory to draw the series level. This week’s fixture will see Tom Westley make his Test debut, replacing the injured (and out of form) Gary Ballance, with similar first nods for Toby Roland-Jones, in for Mark Wood, and, potentially, Dawid Malan. As for the Proteas, there isn’t really the need for any major changes, though Kagiso Rabada returns after a foul-mouthed one-match suspension and is likely to take the place of Duanne Olivier. If England are to avoid the a repeat of their Trent Bridge troubles then their batters need to up the ante, regardless of whether they are first or second to the crease. Root himself is at a Super Mega Runs spread of 150-160, with Alastair Cook at 130-140 and Jonny Bairstow at 100-110; for South Africa, Hashim Amla is at 130-140, with Quinton de Kock just behind at 120-130. Despite that dismal 2nd Test England are still fancied to win both the 3rd meeting, at a 25:10 spread of 12.7-14.2 (where the winner gets 25 points), and the series at a whole, with a binary spread of 45.5-51.3 to South Africa’s 20-25.
