Can the British & Irish Lions get their tour back on track with a win over the Hurricanes ahead of Saturday’s 2nd test against New Zealand? Confidence wasn’t particularly high before the 1st test in Auckland, and was even lower afterwards. To be fair to the Lions they performed admirably in the first half, and trailed by just 5 points as All Blacks went into the interval at 13-8. However the hosts ramped up the pressure after the break, and despite a late Lions try from sub Rhys Webb (and a conversion from a rocky Owen Farrell), New Zealand won 30-15 thanks to a perfect game from Beauden Barrett and a fantastic second half showing from 20-year old Rieko Ioane. So the Lions head into Tuesday’s match against the Hurricanes with their tails between their legs. And it’s not like the tour had been flawless before their battering from the All Blacks. They were defeated in their 2nd match 22-16 against the Blues – with Ioane scoring a 6th minute try – before narrowly losing 23-22 to the Highlanders in game 4. Their trip to face the defending Super Rugby champions in Wellington looks set to be similarly tricky, with Spreadex offering a tight British & Irish Lions/Hurricanes (h) Supremacy spread of 0-3 alongside a Total Points spread of 51-54. Though a win on Tuesday may not significantly alter the Lions’ chances of a shock win on Saturday, a loss could be catastrophic for their psychological strength. The Lions have only ever one a tour in New Zealand once, and never after losing the opening game. Frustratingly for Warren Gatland our traders are already expecting another difficult test for the visitors, offering a New Zealand/British & Irish Lions Supremacy spread of 15-18 alongside a Total Points spread of 48-51.
