Can Europe end the Oceanic-dominance in the 2016 Rugby League Four Nations, which is being hosted in just one country for the first time in the competition’s short history? That host is England, who will be aiming for a home-turf final appearance at Anfield in November. Runners-up at the inaugural Four Nations back in 2009 and their co-hosted tournament in 2011, the English are yet to win the competition, heavily losing both finals to Australia. Back in 2014 England only managed to win one game, their opener against Samoa, going on to narrowly lose against Australia and New Zealand. On Saturday afternoon, then, Wayne Bennett and co. will be hoping England fare better when they take on the Kiwis at the John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield. Like the Aussies New Zealand have won the Four Nations twice, most recently beating Australia in 2014 nearly a year after they had been humiliated in the World Cup final. Like in 2014 Saturday’s game looks set to be a close run thing, with Spreadex offering a choice England/New Zealand Points Supremacy spread of -1.5-1.5. Before all that, however, the tournament kicks off in Hull, when Australia face Scotland on Friday evening. The Kangaroos are far and away the favourites heading into the 2016 Four Nations; they sit at an Outright Index spread of 17.5-19, where the winners get 25 points, the runners-up 10 and everyone nothing at all. That compares to New Zealand’s 8-9.5 and England’s 7.75-9.25, with both sides at 3/1 to be the outright winner; tournament debutantes Scotland, meanwhile, sit at a near non-existent 0-0.25. Scotland reached their first Four Nations competition by winning the 2014 European Cup. After finishing on the same 4 points as France and Ireland (poor, winless Wales) it went down to points difference, with Scotland’s 29 edging the French 26. Sadly for the Scots their match against the Aussies is unlikely to be anywhere near as close, with Spreadex offering a whopping Australia/Scotland Points Supremacy spread of 42-45.
