After 2017’s colossal upset, will Saturday’s 2018 Epsom Derby through up another punter-pleasing surprise? At 40/1, last year’s victory by Wings of Eagles was arguably the biggest Derby shock for 43 years, even if it was the 6th Epsom winner from train Aidan O’Brien (and his 4th in 5 years). Well it looks like O’Brien is on track to add to his tally, with his Saxon Warrior odds on favourite at 4/5. Not only that, the frontrunner is also looking to further its chances of a Triple Crown after nabbing the 2000 Guineas Stakes – then ridden by O’Brien’s son Donnacha – in his 3 year old debut back at the start of May. Next up is Roaring Lion, who was beaten by Saxon Warrior by neck in the Racing Post Trophy in 2017, at a fixed odds price of 13/2. Ridden by Oisin Murphy, who already has 77 victories in 2018, the horse came 5th in the 2000 Guineas Stakes, before winning the Dante at York. Moving away from the clear top 2, Hazapour, Young Rascal and Delano Rossevelt are all potential dark-ish horses. Hazapour, ridden by 2-time Derby winner Frankie Dettori is at 17/2 after finishing in 1st at the Derrinstown Stud Trial at Leopardstown. Chester Vase champ Young Rascal, meanwhile, is at 11/1, with Delano Roosevelt at 12/1. The middle of the fixed odds pack then finds Knight to Behold at 16/1, Masar at 20/1, The Pentagon at 28/1, and Dee Ex Bee and Sevenna Star both at 33/1. As for this year’s potential Wings of Eagles, Spreadex have Kew Gardens and Nelson both at 40/1, with Rostropovich at 50/1 and Zabriskie at a hefty 66/1.
