Premiership Rugby Final Preview – Exeter Chiefs vs Saracens, Saturday 1st June 2019



For a 2nd season in a row, Exeter Chiefs and Saracens battle it out for the Premiership title this Saturday, at 3pm on BT Sport 1.

The finish to the main portion of the season was almost identical to 2017/18. Then Exeter topped the table with 85 points, with Saracens 8 points behind on 77; this time out the deficit was the same, only with both sides picking up one extra point compared to last year.


Interestingly, despite the gulf in points, this didn’t stop Saracens picking up their 4th title following a 27-10 victory at Twickenham. All of those trophies have been collected since 2010, making them easily the decade’s most successful side.

Neither club encountered any trouble in the play-offs. Mark McCall’s beat Gloucester 44-19 at the Allianz Park, while the Chiefs knockout about Northampton Saints, winning 42-12 at Sandy Park.

So far in 2018/19, the spoils have been shared between the Premiership’s leading lights. Back in December Exeter easily bested their rivals 31-13 at home, picking up a bonus point in the process. However, Saracens more than got their revenge at the start of May, inflicting a 38-7 loss on the Chiefs in the penultimate weekend of the season proper.

That more recent victory, alongside the fact they did a number on the Chiefs in the 2018 final, just about gives the defending champions the edge, with Spreadex offering a Saracens/Exeter Points Supremacy spread of 5-8.
