Hosting for the second tournament in a row, can England finally win their first ever ICC Champions Trophy in June? Both times England have hosted the competition – first solo in 2004 and then, as is the case this year, with Wales in 2013 – they have finished as runners-up. In the former the victor ended up being West Indies, in the latter India. This time, however, Eoin Morgan’s side are favourites, at an Outright Index spread of 39-43 following a string of strong results in 2017. Since losing their 2017 opening series against India 2-1 England have been in fine form, beating the West Indies 3-0 before nabbing a pair of victories over Ireland at the start of May. Their only slip up came against South Africa on Monday, and that was arguably only due to the side switching off having already won the first 2 games of the series. The route to the semi-finals, however, won’t be easily. England need to escape a punishing Group A, one that includes the Australia (the ICC’s top-ranked ODI side), New Zealand and Bangladesh. The Aussies are breathing down England’s neck on the Outright Index, at a spread of 38-42, while the Kiwis are at a less promising 18-22. As for Bangladesh, they sit at a tournament-low of 4-7, and look set for a heavy defeat in the first match of the competition, with our traders offering an England/Bangladesh Supremacy spread of 45-55. Despite their recent series defeat to the hosts, South Africa are still the favourites to top Group B, at an Outright Index spread of 36-40. That’s ahead of India – the most successful country into the competition’s history with 2 wins and one losing final – at 32-36, Pakistan at 13-17 and Sri Lanka at 7-10.
