2021/22 PREMIER LEAGUE POINTS TOTALS MARKETS

After a summer of international football, the focus now turns on the domestic scene once more, with club football taking centre stage. Just under 4 weeks remain until the start of a new Premier League season, and Spreadex have now made available Points Totals markets for each team - so will you buy or sell?

THE FAVOURITES FOR THE TITLE

After an anti-climactic title race last season, in which the challenge of Man Utd fell away and Liverpool had a huge slump in their title defence due to an injury crisis, Man City comfortably won the title with a total of 86 points - 12 points ahead of Utd, although they had a shaky end to the season themselves. City start as favourites to retain their title this time around, with a points spread of 86.5-88.

Utd will hope that they can continue rebuilding and improve on results from last season, in which they dropped many points to teams they were fully expected to beat. However, this season Spreadex are projecting a similar tally for the Red Devils, with a spread of 72.5-74. 2018/19 Champions Liverpool will look for a far better campaign than last season, and this push should be bolstered by the return of key defender Virgin Van Dijk. After a points tally of just 69 last season, Spreadex are projecting an improvement with a spread of 75-76.5 making them joint second-favourites.

They are in that joint position with Chelsea, who turned their season around in spectacular fashion to beat Man City in the Champions League final, although there was some disappointment with the side losing in the FA Cup Final to Leicester, and very nearly missing out on the top-4 on the final day, before that UCL victory. However, Thomas Tuchel's men have been getting stronger, and with the German now able to start the season in charge, the Blues are available at the same spread as Liverpool.

THE FAVOURITES FOR THE DROP

On the other side of the table, new boys Norwich, Watford and Brentford are not expected to make a particularly big splash in their promotion to the top table of English football. Brentford and Norwich are available at the same points spread of 35.5-37, while Watford are projected as the favourites for immediate relegation with a points spread of 33.5-35. 39 points were required for survival last season by Burnley in 17th place, so the new boys may have their work cut out if the projections ring true.

However, the Premier League has been known for surprises and for new boys to punch above their weight - just think back to Sheffield Utd in their recent campaign back in the Premier League before relegation last season, so there may well be some overperformance and unpredictable results, especially if the sides can continue to build on what they showed in the Championship last season.
