Match Preview

England v Scotland, 8pm ITV 1

The highly anticipated Home Nations match-up will finally happen tonight, with England facing their traditional rivals Scotland. A match-up with plenty of history, the first H2H in 1872 was the first ever international football fixture! The last tournament meeting between these two, on the other hand, was at EURO 1996 – also in the group stages – and resulted in a 2-0 win for England. Spreadex are offering a price of 9/2 for history to repeat itself tonight.

After the Scots’ opening match defeat against the Czech Republic, the pressure will be on to at least avoid defeat here, which could be terminal to any hopes of qualifying as even one of the best 3rd place teams, while England will be looking to build on the momentum of their win against Croatia and move closer to securing top spot in the group and justifying their status as one of the favourites to win the tournament.

In this 33rd H2H meeting at Wembley, it will be fair to expect an open game and plenty of goals, considering none of the previous 32 matches have finished goalless. If you do fancy a piece of history to occur, Spreadex are offering a 0-0 bore draw fixed odds price of 9/1.

In terms of goalscorers, Raheem Sterling opened his account against Croatia, and now holds a fantastic record with England. The City winger has ended up on the winning side in all 11 international matches in which he has scored – the best 100% winning record in England’s history. Spreadex are offering a price of 19/4 to score first, and a PGMs spread of 18-21.

While an exciting and emotionally-charged match is the least that can be expected, Spreadex fancy England to show their superiority and class, and dominate the Scots – with an England/Scotland Goal Supremacy spread of 1.45-1.65 on offer. Total Goals are at 2.6-2.8, and Total Goal Mins at 132-142. On the fixed odds, England are odds-on at 3/10, with Scotland at a long 10/1, and the draw at 9/2.

euro Winners - wednesday/thursday

Wednesday
In Group A, Wales produced a fantastic display to grab their first victory of the tournament and boost their tally to 4 points, leaving them on the brink of qualification to the knockout stages, and leaving Turkey with only a small chance of remaining in the tournament. Goals from Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts, as well as a virtuoso performance by the talismanic Gareth Bale – despite missing a penalty – led the Welsh to a crucial victory, and they could still top the group with an unlikely win over tournament dark horses Italy – although stranger things have happened!

Also in Group A, Italy were the first team to secure their knockout stage place with another incredible performance and comfortable 3-0 victory against Switzerland. Goals from Manuel Locatelli and Ciro Immobile were enough for another win, and the Italians are really announcing themselves as serious contenders for the trophy with results and performances like this.

In Group B, the race for qualification was blown wide open by Russia’s 1-0 victory over Finland. After the Finns had scored an early goal, only to be ruled out for offside, Russia managed to grab a goal on half-time and hold out for an important victory after their opening defeat to Belgium and will know that they are in with a great chance of qualifying if they can get a positive result against Denmark in their final group game.

Thursday
The day’s action began with a Group C crunch clash between Ukraine and tournament underdogs North Macedonia, with both sides understanding the importance of a victory – and the potential cost of a defeat. In the end, it was Ukraine to grab a crucial 2-1 victory with goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk – just like in the opening match defeat to the Netherlands. The match was an entertaining one, with 2 penalties awarded and 2 saved, although Alioski managed to score the rebound for North Macedonia’s goal. Ukraine will now face Austria, knowing that if they avoid defeat they will secure 2nd place.

In Group B, Belgium were forced to overcome adversity and a highly motivated and spirited Denmark side, who took the lead in the opening minutes with a goal by Yussuf Poulsen. However, the Belgians showed their class in the end and managed to fight back, with goals from Thorgan Hazard and the returning talisman Kevin de Bruyne sealing all three points and showing just why they are seen as one of the leading favourites to win the tournament. Denmark, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their opening 2 results after playing well under their extraordinary circumstances, but will know a victory against Russia in their final group game will likely see them through.

In the final match of the day, the Netherlands secured their knockout stage place and the 1st place in Group C with a comfortable victory over Austria. With Matthijs de Ligt back in defence, the Dutch looked far more solid than in their 3-2 victory over Ukraine, and a penalty by star striker Memphis Depay and another goal by the hugely impressive right-back Denzel Dumfries was enough to secure the victory with a clean sheet, and the Dutch will be extremely happy with their form on their return to the big tournament stage.
