Sports betting blog: Which team was the best to back in the Premier League in 2014-15?

After yesterday looking at the football spread betting final Premier League table, today we focus on which side would have come top of the pile for betters based on fixed odds bets.

The table below shows the return punters would have seen over the season if they had put £10 on each team every week to win home and away, based on the average football odds per team before kick-off.

And the winning team is (drum roll)… the mighty Swansea City who would have given a return of £578.70 (so an actual profit of £198.70 after disregarding the return of the £380 stakes) if backed with a tenner every game all season.

The Swans’ big wins away at Manchester United (just over 8/1) and Arsenal (just over 9/1) last term helped them pip Stoke, who in turn were right up there thanks to their early season win at Manchester City (just over 14/1).

Best To Back In Premier League 14-15 New

Only seven sides would have returned a profit if backed with a tenner in every game – Swansea, Stoke, Crystal Palace, Totenham, West Brom, Aston Villa and Southampton – while champions Chelsea themselves would have resulted in a 10p loss overall.

In fact all of the final top four would have resulted in a loss if backed every week of the season with Arsenal returning a loss of £8.40, Manchester City a loss of £14 and Manchester United a loss of £16.40.

The worst side to back each week would have been Sunderland who would have actually left punters £145.20 out of pocket from the total of £380 staked.
