Can Sunderland bury Bury when the two sides meet in the 1st round of the Carabao Cup this Thursday? After a few seasons of relegation-flirtation Sunderland finally gave up the ghost in 2016/17, plummeting to the bottom of the Premier League despite having a top 10 striker in Jermain Defoe. Well now the English international is gone and the Black Cats are back in the Championship for the first time since 2007, under the new leadership of Simon Grayson following David Moyes’ departure in May. Last Friday’s curtain raiser against Derby –the side that took Sunderland’s title for ‘Lowest Points Tally in a Premier League Season’ in 07/08 – wasn’t the most convincing start to the team’s latest stint in the Championship. Sunderland were behind after just 11 minutes following a strike from Bradley Johnson, only for Lewis Grabban – who heads into the Cup tie with a Super Meag PGM of 32-38 – to equalise with a penalty just before the break. Though the Black Cats were relatively perky throughout they just couldn’t find another goal, ending their return to the lower leagues with a solitary point. As for Bury, their 2016/17 was almost, if not quite, as bad as Sunderland’s. The Shakers needed 3 managers to keep them in League One: David Flitcroft was gone by mid-November; Chris Brass wasn’t appointed until a month later and still only lasted until mid-February; and Lee Clark, who eventually turned the ship around and helped Bury avoid relegation by a point. They seem to have entered the new season in higher spirits, however, beating Walsall 1-0 thanks to a goal from summer signing Jermaine Beckford. Beckford goes into Thursday’s League Cup fixture with a Super Mega PGM of 18-22, the same spread as fellow new arrival Chris Maguire. Nevertheless, the visitors are still expected to triumph at Gigg Lane, with Spreadex offering a Sunderland/Bury (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.4-0.6 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.5-2.7.
