Can the West Indies end their England tour with an ODI series win, which starts at Old Trafford on Tuesday morning? The Windies haven’t had too bad a trip. Though they got absolutely battered in their 1st Test at Edgbaston, with England winning by a whopping innings and 209 runs, they completed one of the more remarkable and thrilling comebacks in the history of the sport to emerge from the 2nd Test with a 5 wicket victory. They then went on to lose the final Test by 9 wickets, only to roar back to life with Saturday’s T20 fixture. Befitting the fact they are 2 time and defending ICC World Twenty20 champions –winning the 2016 tournament by 9 wickets against England – they beat Eoin Morgan and co. by 21 runs at Chester-le-Street. England won’t be particularly worried about any such slips ups during September’s ODI series, however. Historically the West Indies have some pedigree, being Champions Trophy winners in 2004 and runners up in 1998 and 2006. Yet in the last decade they’ve fallen from ODI grace – in fact, the West Indies failed to qualify for the 2017 Champions Trophy, the first time they’d failed to make an appearance in the history of the competition. An added layer of intrigue to Tuesday’s fixture is that it will likely feature the first ODI appearance of Chris Gayle – who has a Player Performance spread of 42-47 – in more than 2 years. The former Windies captain was playing well in the T20 match on Saturday, quickly racking up 40 runs. However, his lackadaisical approach to movement meant he was dismissed in rather ignominious fashion, highlighting a chink in his armour for England to exploit in the next fortnight. The visitors have shown themselves more than capable of a surprise or two during this tour. Nevertheless their ODI weakness in the last few years makes the hosts the favourites, at an England/West Indies Supremacy spread of 27-37 alongside an England to win match binary spread of 67.7-74.4 and fixed odds of 4/11.
