Can Lewis Hamilton reclaim pole position with a victory at the German Grand Prix this Sunday? For the first time since 2013 Hamilton – who today signed a new 2 year deal with Mercedes – failed to win the British Grand Prix. And, just like in 2013, he was bested by a German rival, with Sebastian Vettel relegating the Brit to the runners-up spot. That allowed Vettel to maintain his lead in the World Drivers’ Championship standings. Heading into the halfway point the 31-year-old has 8 points on Hamilton, at 171 to his foe’s 163. Yet, on Spreadex’s long-term Drivers’ Championship Index, the Ferrari ace just can’t catch up with Hamilton, sitting at a spread of 45-48 to the Brit’s 48-51, where the season winner gets 60 points, 2nd place 40 points, 3rd place 30 points etc. Vettel also trails the Mercedes maestro in terms of fixed odds, with the pair at 5/4 and 4/6 respectively. As for the German Grand Prix itself, Hamilton has the better record at the Hockenheimring, picking up victories in 2008 and the last iteration in 2016. In contrast, the season-leader’s sole win on home soil came at the Nurburgring GP-Strecke back in 2013 (Hamilton also triumphed at the track in 2011). Yet his recent win at Silverstone makes it too close to call, with Vettel and Hamilton sharing a Race Index spread of 64-69, though there is a fixed odds gap, with the former driver at 13/8 to the latter’s 6/4. Beyond the frontrunners, last season’s bronze-medallists Valtteri Bottas has the next best Race Index spread at 47-52, despite the fact he currently sits in 5th, while Kimi Raikkonen is at 45-50 and Max Verstappen is at 40-44. In terms of the season-long Constructors’ Index, Mercedes are still out in front at 40-43 to Ferrari’s 34-37, despite the fact the Italian team have a 20 point lead over their German peers, thanks not only to Vettel having the edge over Hamilton, but Raikkonen sitting ahead of Bottas.
