Unable to escape their Pool 4 years ago, can England win their first ever Cricket World Cup on home soil? Things are a bit different this time out. Instead of being split into Pools A and B, which then would feed into the quarter-finals, the brunt of the tournament will see all 10 participating countries – down from the usual 14 – compete in one big group, with the top 4 teams on points reaching the semi-finals. This means it will be the first World Cup not to feature all Test playing nations – the recently admitted Ireland and Afghanistan didn’t make the cut – nor any Associate countries. Overall there will be a hefty 45 group stage matches played, with each side stepping out 9 times.
Clearly benefiting from the home advantage, England top Spreadex’s Outright Index with a spread of 48-53, where the winner gets 100 points, the runners-up 50 points, the losing semi-finalists 25 points and those left behind in the group stage a big fat 0. That is maybe something of a surprise given that they lost their warm-up fixture against defending champions Australia by 12 runs last Saturday. The Aussies themselves have an Outright Index spread of 33.5-37.5, also behind India’s 37-41. South Africa then round out the most likely semi-finalists, with a spread of 20-24, followed by 2015’s beaten finalists 18.5-22.5, and Pakistan at 14-17. The tournament opens with a tasty little tête-à-tête between England and South Africa on Sky Sports Cricket. The hosts are expected to leave the Oval with a potentially crucial 2 points this Thursday, with Spreadex offering an England/South Africa Supremacy spread of 21-31, alongside an England to win match spread of 66.6-71.5. Slightly less exciting is Friday’s second fixture between the West Indies and Pakistan. The latter have had a terrible warm-up, losing 4 times against England and once against Afghanistan, but are still fancied to win, at a Pakistan/West Indies Supremacy spread of 0-10.
