RYDER CUP 2023 BETTING PREVIEW

The time for talking is nearly over as the best golfers from Europe and the USA prepare to go head-to-head this weekend in Rome. This is only the third Ryder Cup to be hosted on mainland Europe with the hosts triumphing on both previous occasions (France 2018 and Spain 1997).

There has been a real move in the markets favouring Europe who – at the time of writing – are now the 10/11 favourites in the Ryder Cup odds whilst the Americans are 11/10 and the tie is 10/1.

RYDER CUP BETS

Aside from Ryder Cup betting on the outright winner, there are other ways you can bet on one of the biggest sporting events on earth. Firstly, we have handicap lines available for the event as well as correct score betting. If you fancy the Americans to repeat their 19-9 success from Whistling Straits then you can back that at 50/1, though the betting would suggest that it is likely to be a much closer contest.

In the individual Ryder Cup betting markets Viktor Hovland has emerged as the favourite to score the most points this weekend in the Italian capital. The Norwegian superstar is up to third in the world rankings after a year which saw him record his first PGA Tour win as well is tying second in the PGA Championship. He is 8/1 to get the most points on the board this week.

Ryder Cup veteran Rory McIlroy is also 8/1 to land the most points whilst Scottie Scheffler looks set to lead the charge for the Americans and he is half a point bigger in the Ryder Cup odds at 17/2.

BEST ROOKIE?

Eight men are set to make their Ryder Cup debuts this weekend, four for America and four for Europe. Lining up for the first time for the hosts will be Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, Sepp Straka of Austria, Dane Nicolas Hojgaard and Scottish sensation Robert MacIntyre.

For the USA the debutants are Sam Burns, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman and Max Homa. It is the latter of those four who is expected to be the best rookie over the weekend with Homa at 11/4, Aberg 4/1 with Burns and Clark both 5/1. We are offering three places each way at 1/5 odds so if you fancy Hojgaard at 17/2 or MacIntyre at 8/1, that may be the way to play it.

Tyrell Hatton, who was second at Wentworth two weeks ago sees his spread set at 19.5-22.5 whilst Patrick Cantlay, who scored 3.5 points last time has a spread of 21.6-24.6.

WHO HAS MADE THE EUROPEAN RYDER CUP TEAM?

There is a mix of youth and experience in the European Ryder Cup team for 2023 with the four debutants outlined above joined by an English quartet of Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrell Hatton, and Justin Rose. Rory McIlroy will make his seventh appearance at the Ryder Cup whilst Shane Lowry is back in the side after debuting in 2021. Viktor Hovland and Jon Rahm – who top scored for Europe in the 2021 Ryder Cup – complete the 12-man roster.

WHO HAS WON THE MOST RYDER CUPS?

The USA are the defending champions after winning in Whistling Straits two years ago and the Americans have won 27 of the 43 Ryder Cups. However, when you look at the record from 1979 when the Great British and Irish team became the European team, it is a much closer affair with Europe 11-9 up (one event was tied which saw the European side retain the Ryder Cup).

The American side have only won three out of the last ten Ryder Cups although their success last time out was by a huge margin of victory.
