Weekly Sports Update
There were differing fortunes for the two national sides of the respective codes of rugby this weekend. On Saturday, England’s rugby league side looked quite impressive as they breezed past the Combined Nations All-Stars at Warrington giving Shaun Wane plenty of food for thought ahead of the World Cup.
His counterpart in charge of the rugby union side meanwhile WAS being embarrassed at Twickenham with England getting battered 52-21 by the Barbarians. It was perhaps the worst defeat of Jones’ tenure and raises big questions ahead of the tour to Australia.
Away from the rugby pitch, Royal Ascot had more thrills and spills on the weekend with Naval Crown landing the big Group 1 of the day on Saturday under Frankie Dettori.
Last weekend was the first weekend for a long time without any top-level football, but there were still plenty of spread markets to get stuck into. Below, we review the big winning spreads from the weekend.
Please remember that unlike fixed odds betting, when spread betting losses can exceed deposits.
ROYAL ASCOT 14:30 SATURDAY 18th JUNE – HOLLOWAY BOY RACE INDEX (SETTLED AT 50)
The betting in the first race on the final day was largely about one horse with Alfred Munnings (26-29) the warm favourite to land the spoils in the Chesham. However, Ryan Moore’s mount made no real impression when coming under pressure two furlongs out and faded to finish fifth.
Up front, the game Pearling Path (0.5-2.0) was looking to spring a surprise and looked to be making all, but Holloway Boy (2-4) came home like a train down the stands side to win quite cosily in the end.
Only entered into the race so his owners could get badges and passes for the day, the Karl Burke debutant was mightily impressive under Danny Tudhope and buyers of his race index landed a win of 46x their stake. There was also a consolation for Pearling Path buyers who took home a win of 28x their stake for the second place.
NETHERLANDS V ENGLAND (1ST ODI) – SIXES SQUARED (SETTLED AT 900)
England were clear favourites coming into this ODI series with the Netherlands and after victory in a rain-affected match on Saturday have already wrapped up the series with a game to spare.
The real drama and excitement came on Friday though as England’s batsmen set about the Dutch bowling attack with abandon.
Jason Roy fell for one run, but that mattered not as Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, and Jos Buttler all made centuries in a record run haul for a 50 over match, Buttler scoring 162 off 70 deliveries. As was the case on Sunday, Eoin Morgan was out for a duck but a 22-ball cameo from Liam Livingstone saw the Cumbrian score 66 runs and hit six sixes.
The Dutch batted second and had no real hope of scoring the required 499 runs to win but they gave it a decent go with Max O’Dowd and Scott Edwards putting together respectable innings, between them scoring three of the Netherlands’ four sixes.
The match finished with a massive 30 sixes between the two sides and with the sixes squared market at 200-225 before the match, buyers were in heaven. The final make-up was 900 meaning buyers secured a win of 675x their stake.
LEICESTER TIGERS v SARACENS – MATCH MULTI-POINTS (SETTLED AT 162)
Saracens were the six-point favourites heading into Saturday’s Gallagher Premiership Final but they ultimately came unstuck against a Leicester Tigers side who landed their 11th title in the competition’s history.
The Tigers scored two first-half tries through Hanro Liebenberg and Jasper Wiese to lead 12-6 at the break in what was a tense and cagey affair.
This was not the match for free-flowing rugby and the ball rarely went through the hands, instead both sides relied on the boot to try and secure territory. A pair of converted penalties for Sarries levelled up the match and the potential for extra time was on the cards.
The game needed a hero and up-stepped Freddie Burns. Coming off the bench early in the game for the injured George Ford, the replacement fly-half fired over a last-gasp drop-goal to send the Tigers fans into ecstasy.
The Tigers certainly earned their stripes in a cagey match which saw a small winning make-up in the Multi-Points market. With 18 first-half points and just nine in the second, the final make-up was 162 against a pre-match spread of 467-509.
Sellers were left roaring with delight as they converted a win equal to 305x their stake.
Please note that these are examples of winning bets from the past week, and it is important to remember that spread betting carries a high level of risk to your capital and can result in losses larger than your initial stake/deposit.
